Every day trip from Fukuoka,
ranked and dated.
Nine of the ten best-selling Fukuoka experiences leave the city — this is what Fukuoka is commercially for. Ten trips, each with a verdict, a one-way fare and its August 2026 status, because the July earthquake changed which ones work.
Do Dazaifu: 40 minutes and about ¥420 (~$2.80) each way from Tenjin, and its main hall reopened in May 2026. Add Yanagawa the same day if you want the ¥3,620 (~$24) combo ticket to earn its keep. With more days: Nanzoin's 41-metre reclining Buddha (26 min, ¥380, ~$2.55), then Mojiko for the free walk under the sea to Honshu. Every northern trip on this page runs normally as of 6 August 2026; anything south of Kumamoto is a different question, answered below.
The earthquake question, answered plainly
Read this firstOne dated paragraph, then the ranking. This page was status-checked on 6 August 2026.
A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on 28 July 2026. Fukuoka city is completely unaffected — no damage, no advisories — and northern Kyushu day trips (Dazaifu, Yanagawa, Itoshima, Kitakyushu, Saga, Nagasaki) run normally. Southbound is different: the Kyushu Shinkansen is cut between Kumamoto and Shin-Minamata until at least September (the far southern stretch to Kagoshima-Chuo resumes 7 August), Kumamoto Castle is closed after fresh stone-wall collapses, and a ~70 km stretch of the Kyushu Expressway is shut. Status as of 6 August 2026 — check JR Kyushu's train-information page before booking anything south of Kumamoto.
The practical translation: every trip ranked below is operating. Dazaifu, Yanagawa, Nanzoin, Itoshima, Kitakyushu, Mojiko, Nagasaki and Beppu were all outside the damage zone, and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen to Nagasaki never stopped. What is off the table for now is the southern set — Kumamoto Castle is closed, Kagoshima is not reachable overland from here, and Kurokawa Onsen's bus route runs through the closed expressway corridor. We keep those on a separate dated page rather than pretending an evergreen answer exists: southern Kyushu access, dated. If anything, the northern arc is worth more than usual right now — it is the part of Kyushu that still works.
Every trip, in minutes from Hakata Station
The one map that mattersFukuoka's real product is radial convenience: a compact hub with all of northern Kyushu fanned out around it. Filter by how much of your day you're willing to spend.

| Busan, Korea釜山 | Camellia Line ferry from Hakata Port · a 2-night add-on, not a day trip | 360 min | from ¥12,000 |
Minutes are one-way from Hakata Station by the fastest sensible route, off-peak. Fares are rounded IC-card singles; Beppu and Nagasaki are the limited-express fare, which is exactly the maths the JR Kyushu pass changes.
Ten day trips, ranked by payoff per hour spent travelling
The rankingDazaifu
The #1 trip and close to mandatory for first-timers. The 124-year honden restoration finished in May 2026, so you see the real main hall again — a fact most English guides still haven't caught up with. Add the Kyushu National Museum (¥700, ~$4.65) and it's a comfortable half-day.
Yanagawa
A 60-minute punt through a canal town behind a singing boatman, then steamed eel in a bamboo box. Nishitetsu's Dazaifu-and-Yanagawa combo at ¥3,620 (~$24) bundles both towns, both trains and the boat — the best-value single product in this whole chapter.
Nanzoin
A 41-metre bronze reclining Buddha, roughly the length of the Statue of Liberty, 26 minutes from Hakata on the JR Sasaguri line. The best time-to-payoff ratio in Kyushu — with one honest caveat: foreign visitors pay ¥300 (~$2) since May 2025.
Kitakyushu & Mojiko
Taisho-era port architecture, baked yaki-curry, and a free 780-metre pedestrian tunnel that walks you under the sea from Kyushu to Honshu in about 15 minutes. Cheap, weatherproof and genuinely unlike anything else in Japan.
Itoshima
A white torii standing in the sea, cafes along a sunset road, and November-to-March oyster huts you grill yourself. The honest line every guide buries: it's a car destination that tolerates train, bike and bus. Car-less, plan the torii and one cafe.
Beppu or Yufuin
Two hours each way leaves five or six usable ones — enough for Beppu's steaming hells and one bath, not for a soak-focused day. Beppu beats Yufuin as a day trip, because Yufuin's value is the ryokan you won't be sleeping in.
Nagasaki
Fast trains, a forced cross-platform change at Takeo-Onsen, and about seven hours on the ground. That covers the peace sites or the harbour-and-Dejima half — not both, and not the night view. Our verdict is to sleep there.
Kawachi Fujien wisteria
The wisteria tunnels are as spectacular as the photographs and as awkward as a ticketed festival: a roughly two-week late-April window, advance-only timed slots, and no shuttle bus since 2020. Extraordinary if you plan in March; impossible if you decide on the day.
Southern Kyushu — Kumamoto, Aso, Kagoshima
Not a judgement on the destinations — a transport fact. The shinkansen is severed north of Shin-Minamata, Kumamoto Castle is closed, and a stretch of the expressway is shut. We keep this on a dated page and re-check it rather than writing evergreen fiction.
Busan by ferry
Filed here because thousands of people search for it as a day trip and it categorically isn't one. The Queen Beetle hydrofoil is gone permanently; the surviving Camellia Line ferry takes six hours each way. As a two-night add-on, though, it's a great idea.
Which trip is yours
By travellerThe ranking above is by payoff per travelling hour. This is by who you are — the two orders differ more than you'd expect.
| If you are… | Do this | Because | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-timer with one spare day | Dazaifu | Closest thing Fukuoka has to a compulsory sight, and it's 40 minutes away | WORTH IT |
| Here two days, want maximum contrast | Dazaifu + Yanagawa on one ticket | Shrine, canal punt and eel lunch for ¥3,620 (~$24) of transport | WORTH IT |
| Short on time, want one photograph | Nanzoin | 26 minutes, ¥380 (~$2.55), and a 41-metre bronze Buddha at the end | WORTH IT |
| Travelling with kids | Mojiko + the Kanmon tunnel | Walking under the sea to another island is free and unforgettable at eight years old | WORTH IT |
| Foodie, visiting November–March | Itoshima oyster huts | Grill your own oysters at ¥1,000–1,500/kg (~$6.70–10) — no OTA sells this | WORTH IT |
| Onsen-focused | Beppu — or better, a night there | A day trip buys the hells and one bath; the soak needs an overnight | DEPENDS |
| History traveller | Nagasaki, with a hotel | Seven hours covers half the city and none of the evening | DEPENDS |
| Here in late April | Kawachi Fujien | Advance-only tickets for a two-week window — book in March or forget it | DEPENDS |
Two trips people ask about that aren't on this list: Hiroshima is a genuine 10-hour day by Sanyo shinkansen but isn't covered by any JR Kyushu pass, and Takachiho is only honest as a guided coach. Both are handled in the pass arithmetic on the JR Kyushu pass page.
The two best day trips aren't on JR
The pass trapThis catches people every week, so read it before you buy anything: Dazaifu and Yanagawa are Nishitetsu, not JR — no JR Kyushu pass covers either — and Hakata to Kokura is the Sanyo shinkansen, which JR Kyushu passes also exclude. A Northern Kyushu 3-day pass at ¥15,000 (~$100) needs roughly a Beppu return (¥10,780, ~$72) plus a Nagasaki return to break even, so it clears comfortably on that one itinerary and loses money on the most popular one. Full arithmetic: is the JR Kyushu pass worth it?
The genuinely good transport product here is Nishitetsu's Dazaifu & Yanagawa sightseeing ticket at ¥3,620 (~$24) digital — round-trip rail to both towns plus the donkobune boat ride, against about ¥4,040 (~$27) bought piece by piece. It saves you money and removes four separate ticket transactions. Buy it at the Nishitetsu Tenjin counter or in the app before you board.
The trips worth paying someone else for
When a booking beats a train ticketDazaifu and Yanagawa are so easy by Nishitetsu that guided versions barely accumulate reviews — that's a signal, not a gap. Book a tour for the trips where transfers, timing or a car are the actual problem.
Fukuoka day trips, answered
FAQPage schema pairedWhat day trips can I do from Fukuoka?
Comfortably: Dazaifu (40 min, ~¥420), Yanagawa (50 min, ¥610), Nanzoin (26 min, ¥380), Itoshima (45 min, ¥590) and Kitakyushu/Mojiko (~95 min). At a stretch: Beppu and Nagasaki, both about two hours each way. Not day trips at all: Kagoshima, Kurokawa, Takachiho, Yakushima and Busan — those want their own nights.
Is Fukuoka a good base for Kyushu?
It's the best base in Kyushu for a four-night radius and the wrong base for anything beyond it. Three or four nights here supports Dazaifu-plus-Yanagawa, Itoshima or Nanzoin, and a Kitakyushu day, with Beppu as the stretch. Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima deserve their own beds — the shape is on how many nights.
Did the July 2026 earthquake affect day trips?
Not the northern ones. Fukuoka city took no damage and Dazaifu, Yanagawa, Itoshima, Kitakyushu, Saga and Nagasaki are all operating normally as of 6 August 2026. South of Kumamoto is a genuine problem: the shinkansen is cut, Kumamoto Castle is closed and expressway sections are shut. Dated detail: southern Kyushu access.
Which day trip is best if I only do one?
Dazaifu, for almost everyone. It's the cheapest to reach, the easiest to navigate car-less, and since May 2026 you see the restored main hall rather than scaffolding. If you've been before or want something odder, swap it for Nanzoin — 26 minutes for a 41-metre reclining Buddha is the best ratio in the region.
Do I need a rental car?
Only for Itoshima, and only if you want the far end of the peninsula, the sea cave or the oyster huts. Everything else on this page is rail-and-walk. If you're four people wanting Itoshima or the Saga arc properly, a private charter with a driver works out competitive with four coach seats — but for one or two travellers, the train wins every time.
Are the tourist passes worth buying for day trips?
Usually not. The Fukuoka Tourist City Pass is ¥2,800 (~$18.65) with Dazaifu and still loses money on a realistic day, and JR Kyushu passes don't cover Nishitetsu (Dazaifu, Yanagawa) or the Hakata–Kokura shinkansen. The one pass that genuinely pays is Nishitetsu's ¥3,620 Dazaifu-and-Yanagawa ticket. See the pass debunk.
How early do I need to leave?
For a single northern trip, a 09:30 start is relaxed. For Dazaifu plus Yanagawa in one day — 8 to 10 hours all in — leave Tenjin by 09:00 and book nothing for that evening. For Beppu or Nagasaki, be on a train before 08:00 or the day collapses into travel.
Can I do a day trip on my last day before a flight?
Yes, and Fukuoka is unusually good at it: the airport is two subway stops and ¥260 (~$1.75) from Hakata Station. Dazaifu or Nanzoin in the morning, bags in a station locker, gate by mid-afternoon. The playbook is on the layover page.
